When you’re beginning your research for your orthodontics journey, all the information you find can be a little overwhelming. Maybe you don’t know where to start or what you should even be looking up! Rather than searching online, why not get your answers straight from the source? During your initial consultation, your orthodontist can answer any question you might have about your treatment options or how the procedures work. Here are 5 questions you should ask at your first orthodontic appointment.
1. What Treatment Options Are Available?
The field of orthodontics has a wide array of treatment options available. Certain procedures are more effective for treating specific issues. You should ask your orthodontist what treatment options they offer and what they recommend for your specific case. Having them explain how each method works can help you decide what best suits your lifestyle and oral health.
For instance, if you are looking to straighten your teeth, you might have the option to choose between clear aligners or traditional braces. Both are effective, but maybe you like the clear aligners because they are more discreet. Your orthodontist can walk you through your choices so you can be well-informed before committing to treatment.
2. How Much Does Treatment Cost?
Prior to your initial consultation, your orthodontist will only be able to give you a general estimate on how much treatment will cost. However, once you’re at your appointment, you’ll have a more specific number based on how complex your case is and what treatment you’ve chosen. Additionally, your orthodontist can let you know what payment options their practice takes.
3. How Long Will Treatment Take?
This varies somewhat based on what treatment option you’ve chosen and how complex your case is. It also depends on how well you are following treatment guidelines. Generally, treatment is completed within one to two years. Your orthodontist will be able to give you a much more concrete estimate after they’ve examined you.
4. What Changes Do I Need to Make Once I Start Treatment?
Some treatment options will require dietary restrictions, and others will change your oral hygiene habits. For instance, if you get clear aligners, which are removable, you won’t need to avoid any particular foods, but you will have to brush and floss your teeth after each meal so food debris doesn’t get trapped underneath your aligners. If you get braces, you’ll have a list of foods you should avoid, such as popcorn and gum.
5. How Often Will I Need to Come in?
Your orthodontist will generally want to see you every few weeks during the course of your treatment. This is so your braces or aligners can be readjusted, tightened, or have necessary parts such as elastic bands replaced. However, the frequency is dependent on your specific dental needs and plan.
Don’t feel like these are the only questions you can ask! Your orthodontist is there for any questions you might have and just wants you to feel comfortable going into your treatment. They are more than happy to share any information you need.
